Watch out for These Dangerous Dental TikTok Trends

While learning a new recipe or cleaning tip can be helpful, following medical or dental advice from TikTok and other social media can be risky. Viral videos often promise quick fixes for a perfect smile, but they rarely mention the long-term damage these “hacks” can cause.

Dental Hacks to Avoid

It is important to remember that most content creators seek out clicks with little to no oversight or accountability for promoting false information. And because it is rarely a dental professional putting out videos, what looks like a simple, money-saving trick in a 60-second video can lead to irreversible damage and expensive repair work.

Whitening with Charcoal or Baking Soda

One of the most common trends we see over and over again involves using activated charcoal or baking soda (often in a paste made with lemon juice or some other liquid) to whiten teeth. Influencers claim these cheap and easily available ingredients can scrub away stains and leave you with an instantly whiter smile.

Unfortunately, charcoal and baking soda are incredibly abrasive and can significantly damage tooth enamel. Worn enamel can lead to increased tooth sensitivity and put you at a higher risk for decay and cavities. Ironically, continued erosion can expose the yellow dentin layer underneath the enamel, actually making your teeth look yellower in the long run.

Instead, talk to your dentist about whitening options. Professional whitening treatments use chemically safe ingredients that lift stains without destroying the tooth structure.

Replacing Brushing with Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient practice of swishing oil (usually coconut) in the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. TikTok users often promote this as a “natural” alternative to brushing and flossing, claiming it pulls toxins out of the teeth and gums.

While oil pulling is not inherently dangerous, it is not a replacement for brushing and flossing. Swishing oil cannot effectively remove the sticky plaque biofilm or food particles trapped between teeth.

To prevent gum disease and decay, you must physically brush your teeth and clean between them with floss. If you choose to try oil pulling, use it as a supplement to a standard oral hygiene routine, not a substitute.

DIY Braces and Aligners

Another extremely alarming trend is attempting to straighten teeth or fix gaps at home using rubber bands or other DIY materials. This practice is incredibly dangerous. Moving teeth too quickly can cause damage to tooth roots. Even worse, rubber bands restrict blood supply and even potentially lead to tooth loss.

We even discourage use of mail-in aligners as tooth alignment is a complex process that should always use be done under close professional supervision.

Filing Teeth Down

Another scary trend involves content creators using nail files or sandpaper to shape teeth, smooth chips, or even prep for dental work like crowns or veneers.

Filing your own teeth is extremely damaging to enamel. Enamel does not grow back, so this type of damage is irreversible. Potential results can include:

  • Extreme sensitivity: Removing enamel exposes the nerve endings to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Infection: If the pulp chamber is breached, bacteria can enter the tooth, requiring a root canal.
  • Structural weakness: Thinner teeth are more prone to chipping and breaking.
  • Decay: Tooth enamel provides a protective function, and removing any amount of it without professional know-how can weaken this barrier and leave your teeth susceptible to cavities.

Dentists perform tooth contouring or veneer prep, but they remove only tiny, calculated amounts of enamel and use other methods to prevent damage.

Gluing on False Teeth or Fangs

During Halloween or for other cosplay, you can find people using nail glue, super glue, or other household adhesives to attach vampire fangs or fake teeth.

These glues are often toxic and are not designed for internal use. They can cause chemical burns to the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. Additionally, once the glue hardens, it can be extremely difficult to remove. Pulling off fake teeth can damage tooth enamel or even loosen them.

If you are going to wear false teeth, choose a dental adhesive or wax product specifically meant for temporary use, typically found in denture sections of pharmacies.
