Cracked teeth can lead to numerous difficulties if they are not treated, from long-term discomfort to eventual tooth loss. However, there are several options for treating cracked teeth that can help you keep your teeth and prevent problems in the future. Our cosmetic dentist serving Hinsdale IL 60521 can discuss these various options with you.

Treating Cracked Teeth

Some cracks in teeth are so small that they cannot be seen with the naked eye. These cracks can often be detected using X-rays or digital imaging. If your dentist discovers cracks in these early stages, treatment can be relatively simple, usually consisting of placing a dental crown to prevent the crack from becoming more serious. Cracked teeth can lead to numerous difficulties if they are not treated, from long-term discomfort to eventual tooth loss.

More extensive damage might require endodontic therapy, also called a root canal. In this procedure, the nerve and pulp tissue is removed from the interior of the tooth and replaced with a special, antiseptic filler. A crown is then placed over the tooth.

In very severe cases, the dentist might need to remove the tooth. After the extraction, you can consult with a cosmetic dentist to determine the best way to replace the tooth. These options can include dental implants, bridges or partial dentures.

Causes of Cracked Teeth

Teeth can become cracked under a variety of circumstances. These can include:

  • Direct trauma to the tooth
  • Damage due to teeth grinding
  • Everyday wear and tear
  • Side effects of large dental fillings, especially metal fillings

To prevent cracks from developing in the teeth, avoid biting hard objects, and if you grind your teeth at night, speak to your dentist about treating this issue to protect your teeth from damage.

If you do suffer from cracked teeth, consult with our dentistry team to determine the best way to treat your condition. If a tooth must be removed, our dentists can also determine the best way to replace your missing tooth or teeth.
