Hinsdale dental health for kidsYour kids look up to you and depend on you in every way. When it comes to their oral health habits, this is especially important to remember. In all honesty, brushing and flossing aren’t exciting activities for children. There are hundreds (maybe even thousands) of other activities they’d rather be doing. But brushing and flossing provide a unique opportunity for teaching your kids a sense of responsibility. By discussing their dental health and dental hygiene with them, you’ll impart wisdom about personal care and what it means to be a grown up. This blog post offers more advice on communicating with your kids about oral hygiene, as well as other steps you can take to both establish positive dental attitudes in your children and help them build strong teeth from even a young age.

Giving Your Kids Strong Teeth

Children’s permanent teeth are developing even in the womb. It’s therefore crucial that you engage your kids in healthy oral practices from an early age – even before they turn one. This will help prevent early decay and the need for fillings. The longer a child can go without needing dental work, the more mature and ready they will be for the day when a cavity arrives.

Take part in the following practices to help your kids’ teeth thrive:

  • Teach by example – Brush and floss alongside your kids to get them more excited about oral hygiene. You can also take this opportunity to monitor their techniques and make sure they’re brushing for 2 minutes.
  • Provide healthy foods – Stock your fridge and pantry with raw fruits and vegetables, dairy products, nuts, and other healthy snacks to give your kids’ smiles a great foundation of health.
  • Buy fluoridated dental products – Tap water and fluoridated dental products will give your children’s enamel the minerals it needs to develop.
  • Discuss dental visits – Talk about what will happen in the dental chair with your kids to get them ready for exams. You’re also welcome to bring them by the office to get them comfortable prior to the big day.
