Commonly Asked Wisdom Tooth Extraction Questions

  • When should I have my wisdom teeth removed? For most patients, it’s best to have them removed right as they’re beginning to erupt but before they develop deeper roots, which could cause complications. Teeth should be evaluated between 16-19 and removed before the age of 20, in most cases. Many teens or college students have them extracted over a break from school so that their schedules aren’t disrupted.
  • When is extraction necessary? Wisdom teeth can cause big problems as or after they erupt. They may be impacted, meaning they’re trapped beneath gum tissue or jaw bone. They could place pressure on surrounding teeth, leading to bite issues and discomfort. There may not be enough room in the mouth for all your teeth. And even if wisdom teeth don’t present any of these issues, they’re a target for bacteria and common location of cavities and gum disease. Wisdom teeth aren’t particularly helpful in biting or chewing (our diets and daily lives have evolved past them), so removal is often the better option.
  • What will the healing process be like? Swelling is common, and you may want to lay low for a couple days after surgery so that nobody sees your puffy cheeks. Pain is minimal, and the most important part of healing is keeping your surgical areas clean and treating your mouth with care. Follow your dentist’s instructions and let us know if bleeding won’t stop, or if the swelling or discomfort worsens after a few days.
  • Will the procedure be painful? You will be completely numb during the procedure, and will not feel pain. You will feel some pressure as the teeth are loosened and extracted, but it’s very manageable.
  • Can I receive sedation? If you’re anxious about treatment, we’ll provide dental sedation to help ease your nerves and improve the experience.
  • How long until I feel normal again? It will be a few weeks before your mouth completely heals, and then you’ll be ready for anything – and your wisdom teeth won’t be bothering you ever again.
