Preparing for Dental Implants

Not every implant patient will need to take preparatory steps before treatment. It’s more likely that you’ll need to receive one of these procedures if your tooth has been missing for a long period of time, or if it’s been many years since you last visited the dentist’s office.

Why is all this extra work worth it? Because once your jaw bones and mouth are healthy and supportive to implants, you’re far more likely to see implant success, and extended dental implant lifespans.

  • Bone graft – After losing a permanent tooth, the bone tissue in the area lacks support. This leads to the bone resorbing (dissolving), which weakens your jaw structure. Without adequate bone density, it’s not possible for an implant to integrate with your jaw – and that’s where a bone graft comes in. Adding a small amount of bone to the treatment area will augment it and provide enough tissue for successful osseointegration.
  • Periodontal treatment – If you have gum disease, your mouth isn’t a safe environment. We can’t be certain that healing after implant surgery will be safe from complications or infection. But treating your gum disease prior to surgery will reduce this risk.
  • Fillings – As with gum disease, leaving cavities in place creates unnecessary risks for your healing and implant success. We’ll treat any decay and place restorations to be sure your entire smile is healthy and supportive.
  • Time – You may need to spend some time healing and recuperating after these preparatory treatments, before receiving your implants. But spending those months today will help you see the most fulfilling implant experience down the road.
